American Patrol Boat Cold War
P22 Patrol Boat. Well, I never expected to see this in Sandwich. We were allowed to go round the boat on a tour with one of the guys dressed in World War II uniform. His knowledge of the boat was incredible. I don’t think there was one thing he didn’t know about it from its conception (mk1) in 1941 after pearl harbour to it being rebuilt in 1952 (mk2). Tour takes about 15/20 mins, but apparently there is a talk for Britain tour that takes a lot longer by crew member Shane, 30min plus. You can still book tours out to sea on this vessel. The only one left in Europe.
History plus seals =win win
Had a lovely few hours upstream on this historic boat. Some lovely history gems. We stopped upstream with the seals which provided excellent photo opportunities. The nature reserve marshlands are great for twitchers. All the volunteers were nice and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend
Had an amazing trip. Could not thank all the crew enough.. Would highly highly recommend
Interesting Visit to USN P22
A friend recommended seeing USN P22 Gunboat on our recent trip to Sandwich. Really interesting tour of this vessel that has a unique history. The lovely Alex gave us a guided tour and we found out lots of facts about the origins of P22 and how she has also appeared in various films. She is staffed by volunteers who are obviously passionate about the ship's heritage and keeping her preserved and maintained through donations. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
Engaging historical journey!
Shane gave us an amazing tour. His knowledge and passion were evident. This is an amazing part of history and well worth a visit!
A little piece of history
This boat does tours and trips but not on the day we visited, unfortunately, but the info boards have some very interesting facts about its life. You can look at it from the quayside and even imagine its life in the Dunkirk film with Harry Styles
absolutely brilliant trip on the P22. Barry and the crew made my boys feel so welcome. Can't wait to sail again!
history nature . got it all !
Brilliant ! Bring a camera. If chilly bring a coat. You can explore the boat before the trip begins. This trip has it all if you enjoy nature and history or just like boats. The river Stour is full of history including Richborough secret port. See the seals on the banks and in the river at the river mouth. Everybody on board is very friendly. All run by volunteers for the trust. Brilliant trip. Maybe explore Sandwich as well. Good day out for all of us.
Had two great trips on the P22 recently, Barry and his crew are very friendly and informative. A nice glass of wine and lots of biscuits en route. Plenty of wildlife, Including wading birds and Seals. Lots of history along the way. The P22 and it’s crew are an asset the town can be very proud off.
We started a walk around the town here and paused by the Medieval 'cottage'. Chatted to lady inside who gave us lowdown on all things Sandwich. Recommend this small local enterprise (baking bread, blacksmith & building old replica boat)
We had the most splendid trip with USN P22 today. There was an amazing crew and captain, the boat is so special and the crew could not have been bettered. A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE Seal watching, prosecco, coffee on board, I will remember this event forever, thank you.
Great time amongst history!
I was not sure what to expect when my grandad invited me but it was great. The crew and captain are fantastic, so friendly and informative and made the trip even better. I’m 19 years of age and although I had only some knowledge on the history the boat was involved with, learning about it today really bought it to life. You get given a tour of the boat and the crew and captain will answer any questions. They explain how the boat and crew was used in the 2017 Dunkirk film which in its self is amazing. Prosecco, coffee and biscuits provided on board and lovely views all around. They gave the opportunity for people to try driving the boat and my 14 year old cousin was guided driving the boat for a good hour. Also did a bit of seal watching! Such a great location thankyou for a lovely day out. Not much history is kept how it is nowadays it is nice to see what I have heard and learnt at school come to life in such a practical way. One thing that stuck with me from today is how they take veterans out on the river for a cuppa and talk about their experiences which is a great way to show our ongoing appreciation for them
Interesting to find this boat here!
USN P22 is a United States Navy gunboat, built by a German shipbuilder shortly after the Second World War for the American military to patrol the river Rhine during the Cold War era. It is the only one still afloat out of a fleet of 23. It is now in the harbour at Sandwich and takes people on trips. It was recently used in the film Dunkirk.
Lovely people! Going out on this boat was so exciting! A brilliant experience.
Interesting ship to visit
We visited the P22 and we enjoyed to learn about how the Americans protected the Rhine after the Second World War. The person who lead our small group was very friendly and knew a lot about this period of time. The history behind the P22 was interesting to hear about. We liked to see the small space the crew had to live in and we enjoyed the look at the diesel engines. Thank you for this nice visit!!!
Came across P22 in Ramsgate Harbour and had a great tour of the vessel and the history behind her. Looking forward to booking a trip at some point and if you're around the Ramsgate or Sandwich marinas would recommend taking some time out to speak to the team preserving her.
I had a very interesting tour of the gun boat today and hopefully in the future to have a trip on her.
Great afternoon P22 with family and friends on Sunday, very interesting tour of the boat and great trip down the river to see the seals. Great crew made it so memorable Thank you
Had a great afternoon. Nothing was too much trouble and made to feel very welcome.
A brilliant day out with friends and family. We all loved it. Would highly recommend. The crew are fantastic.
Barry and his team are a lovely crew, sailing and restoring this amazing ship. The journey was smooth, not overcrowded and were brilliant with the kids. They made sure we had a brilliant day with Seal watching. They have painstakingly put time, effort and money in restoring and sailing this ship which is now part of a charitable organisation for people to enjoy. Thanks for a great day.
very interesting tour by a very knowledgeable young man.
We were surprised to find a Cold War military boat moored up in peaceful Sandwich and enjoyed a tour around it.
The guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and his talk covered the boat’s life patrolling the Rhine as well as it’s restoration and current usage.
Admission was free but the boat is run as a charity so they accept donations.
Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Sandwich but bear in mind that there are fairly steep steps down into the below deck sections.
Awesome. Great to see a 1950s boat so well preserved with dedicated volunteers. Well worth going to Sandwich just to see her. Oh PS if like this weekend you’re fortunate you’ll see re-enactors in period dress.
What an amazing experience! Great to walk through history and the stories brought it all to life!!
Had a brilliant visit during the Thanet Heritage Days. Really friendly crew who are clearly very proud of USN P22 as they should be it is stunning.
Absolutely must visit if you see it, the tour is well worth it
Excellent tour from Capt.Barry - Lovingly restored vessel, well worth a visit
